1871, letter dated 3.5.1871 from San Jose (California) via New York to the President of the American College in Rome, Italy, franked with two singles of the 2 cents brown (Jackson) and 10 cents brown (Jefferson), tied with a black fancy cancel and also with the red "NEW YORK MAY 11/4", beside "SAN JOSE CAL, MAY 3" and red "P.D.", the letter also bears the postmark of Aachen "Wfr. 1 1/2" (Groschen) (van der Linden 2986); on reverse the arrival postmark of Rome (Mi. 37, 41)
